When you’re expecting a baby, it’s surprisingly easy to end up with a house full of things you barely use.
There are so many products marketed as essential that putting together a newborn registry can quickly become overwhelming. After three babies, I’ve become much more selective about what actually earns its place in our home.
These are six things I’ve found myself using constantly — not just occasionally, but genuinely every day. They’re the pieces that have made life with a newborn a little easier, more organised and, in some cases, considerably more comfortable.
6 newborn essentials at a glance
| Change table | Keeps everything organised and makes countless nappy changes much more comfortable |
| Baby lounger | A convenient supervised spot for your newborn around the house |
| Swaddle sleeping bag | Helps babies settle more calmly for naps and overnight sleep |
| Reclining bouncer | Lets baby safely be nearby and see what’s happening while you get things done |
| Baby carrier | Keeps baby close while freeing up your hands when they want to be held |
| Play gym | Gives baby a dedicated space to explore, practise movement and interact with toys |
1. A change table
Why we like it: An organised, comfortable-height station makes the countless nappy changes of the newborn stage much easier.
Before having my first baby, I was sceptical about change tables. Surely you can change a baby anywhere?
And you can. But what I realised very quickly was that having one dedicated, organised place where everything you need for nappy changes is within reach is incredibly convenient and much better for your back and posture.
You spend a lot of time changing nappies during those first few months, so having a setup at a comfortable height makes much more difference than I expected.
We actually bought our change table after our daughter was born, and after using it with all three of our children, I wouldn’t go without one.
I particularly like designs that can eventually be repurposed. Depending on the style you choose, a change table can later become useful storage for children’s clothes, toys or other everyday items rather than becoming a piece of furniture you suddenly have no use for.

2. A baby lounger

Why we like it: It gives us a convenient place to keep the newborn nearby while we get on with normal life around the house.
Where your baby sleeps will depend on your setup, but I love having a smaller spot that can be used around the house.
We’re a baby-nest family, alongside a full-sized cot that we use for naps and overnight sleep. Having a portable spot means I can have the baby nearby in the living room while I tidy, make a coffee or get on with something else without constantly moving between rooms.
It’s one of those small conveniences that becomes particularly valuable when you’re recovering from birth and spending much of your day with a newborn in tow.
One important note: Baby nests and loungers are not substitutes for a safe sleep space. We use ours only when the baby is fully supervised. For unsupervised sleep, we use a cot.

3. A swaddle sleeping bag
Why we like it: All three of our babies seemed calmer and settled more easily when swaddled, making it one of our most-used newborn sleep products.
Our favourite by far has been the Love to Dream Swaddle UP. All three of our newborns seemed noticeably calmer once they were tucked into it, and we found they settled more easily for sleep than when they weren’t swaddled.
For daytime naps, I particularly liked having it as part of a predictable wind-down routine when I was trying to encourage the baby to settle for a more intentional nap.
And overnight, it has been a definite favourite.
Of course, every baby is different, but if you’re putting together a newborn registry, a good swaddle is one item I’d be very happy to have ready from day one.
As with any swaddling product, it’s important to follow safe-sleep guidance, including stopping swaddling when your baby shows signs of attempting to roll.

4. A reclining bouncer
Why we like it: It keeps the baby nearby and engaged with family life while giving you a practical place to put them when you need your hands free.
This is one of those products that I didn’t fully appreciate until I had a newborn.
A reclining bouncer gives you somewhere to put the baby nearby while you’re doing something else, and it allows them to look around rather than spending every waking moment lying flat.
I found ours particularly useful in the kitchen. I spend quite a lot of time cooking, and the baby could sit nearby and watch what I was doing while being comfortably supported.
There’s also something lovely about the newborn being able to participate in family life from their little spot on the floor. They can watch you cook, listen to their siblings and take in what’s happening around them.
With our babies, I also found the more upright position useful after feeding. Sometimes I could put the baby into the bouncer while I stayed nearby, rather than needing to hold them continuously.
It quickly became one of those “where would I put the baby without this?” items.
A bouncer is for supervised awake time rather than routine sleep, and it is important to follow the manufacturer’s instructions for positioning, harness use and age/weight limits.

5. A baby carrier

Why we like it: It lets us keep the baby close while still having our hands available to get things done.
Newborns generally want to be close to you, which is perfectly normal. We love having them close too.
There are days when your baby wants to sleep on your chest, but dinner still needs to be made, the house needs some attention or you simply need both hands for something.
That’s when a carrier becomes a lifesaver.
It isn’t necessarily the most comfortable way to cook or tidy the house, but the alternative can be spending an entire nap trapped underneath a sleeping baby on the sofa. When something genuinely needs to get done, being able to keep the baby on your chest while having your hands free is invaluable.
We use the Ergobaby Omni 360, and it has been a staple with all three of our children. It’s also brilliant for walks and has enough longevity to make it feel like a worthwhile investment rather than a short-lived newborn purchase.
For me, this is one of the baby products that genuinely earns its place in the house.
If you use a carrier, make sure your baby is positioned according to the manufacturer’s instructions, with their airway clear and their face visible.

6. A play gym

Why we like them: It gives the baby their own little space to explore while also creating a useful boundary when older siblings are around.
A play gym might look like a relatively simple purchase, but it gets a surprising amount of use.
It gives your baby a defined space to lie down, look around, interact with toys and practise tummy time. The toys hanging above them give them something interesting to focus on and reach towards as they become more aware of their surroundings.
But there’s another reason I particularly love play mats when you have older children.
With a newborn and older siblings around, the mat creates a very obvious little boundary:
This is the baby’s space.
It gives the baby somewhere to lie and explore while also helping older children understand where the baby is. In a busy family home, that little bit of defined personal space can be very useful.

The six things I’d buy again
After three children, these are the newborn products that have consistently earned their place in our home and if I needed to I’d buy again without hesitation.
Not because they’re the most exciting things on a baby registry, or because you technically need them to look after a newborn, but because they’ve made everyday life easier.
And I think that’s the better way to approach baby shopping.
You don’t need every clever gadget marketed as a newborn essential. You need a handful of things that genuinely make the repetitive parts of having a baby — feeding, changing, sleeping, settling and simply getting through the day — a little easier.
Beautiful things. Useful ideas. Better choices.
